The Early Camps (1933–1934)

To house this mass of prisoners, various local authorities created makeshift detention centers in schools, abandoned factories, and other available buildings across Germany. 

Examples of these early, ad hoc camps include:

• Nohra, established in a school on March 3, 1933, which is often considered the very first camp.
• Oranienburg, established in a disused brewery near Berlin on March 21, 1933, and run by the SA.
• Columbia Haus in Berlin, which held prisoners under investigation by the Gestapo. 

Dachau: The “Model” Camp

Dachau was unique among these early camps because it was a permanent, centrally organized camp under the exclusive control of Heinrich Himmler’s SS (Schutzstaffel). Its first prisoners arrived on March 22, 1933. 

Dachau served as the prototype and model for the entire Nazi concentration camp system. Theodor Eicke, the camp’s second commandant, developed the brutal regulations and organizational structure at Dachau, which were then imposed on all other camps in Germany, formalizing a system of terror and arbitrary punishment outside of the normal judicial process. 

Most of the other early, improvised camps were disbanded by 1935 and replaced by larger, SS-run facilities such as Sachsenhausen (1936) and Buchenwald (1937). Dachau was the only camp opened in 1933 that remained in operation until the end of the war in 1945.
